2. Navarasam 12 (Tamil Literary Competitions) by Kallang Community Club

Navarasa Thiruvizha is a Tamil language competition for secondary school students that has been conducted successfully since 2012. It features a variety of events celebrating Tamil language and culture.

Objectives of the Competition:

• To provide Tamil students with a platform to participate actively in Tamil language and cultural competitions

• To instil a strong passion for the Tamil language and culture among students

• To celebrate and encourage students’ achievements in Tamil language and culture

Present Work to SPS (MOE) Shawn Huang & NDP Chairman EXCO (8 Aug'24)

Our students S Mattea Abby and Nicholas Tan presented their work and share their stories with Guest of Honor Senior Parliamentary Secretary (MOE) Shawn Huang at the annual Gift to SG event, NDP 2024 by Our Heart for Singapore Gallery.

2023

Live On Festival (LOF) 2023

Live On Festival (LOF) is organised by the National Organ Transplant Unit (NOTU), Ministry of Health. NOTU oversees both living donor and deceased donor organ transplants and is also responsible for the promotion of altruistic act of organ donation. and transplantation activities in Singapore.

Live On Festival encourages participants, in particular youths, to express their thoughts on organ donation and transplantation through art and writing. Designed with the perspective to be consonant with the goals of the Ministry of Education (MOE)’s Character and Citizenship Education (CCE) curriculum, inculcating values of responsibility, compassion, empathy and altruism by providing insights into the delicate and emotive nature of the topic of organ donation and transplantation.

2 students received awards in the school category for their artwork entries. Lin Xi from Sec 3E5 received the Distinction Award for her mixed media artwork titled Rich in biodiversity: right in the heart of the island, Singapore. Erindianz Amellia Binte Suriyan from 3E5 received the Merit Award for her mixed media artwork titled HEARTfelt Connections.

Artist Statement:
Singapore calls itself ‘Garden City’. With landscape of towering architecture in the compact city-state, Singapore has interspersed parks, rivers, and ponds amid our high-rises. Visioning my organs as my friend, it would be breathtaking to go on an adventure together and capture the island’s undeniable charm. Depicting the anatomy of the human body as an illustration of the iconic places and activities to discover in regions of Singapore. It is also to raise awareness for the organs that can be donated and transplanted to patients with end stage organ failure or for research and education purposes. The first stop of the adventure is uncovering bird paradise at Singapore’s Bird Park, and its nature wildlife reserve. It symbolises the lungs, and below it is HDB flats, where many calls it ‘Home’, a sense of belonging. Moving to the right, with a walk through the scenic view of the Marina Bay and iconic statue, Merlion Park, representing the liver. While travelling to the stomach of Singapore’s famous island, Sentosa, and taking public transport in the MRT train to span around this rich biodiversity Singapore, right in the heart of the island.

Artist Statement:
Did you know that up to eight lives can be saved from organ donation? For someone awaiting a transplant, donation can mean the difference between life and death. From the mirror image of a broken vase heart on the left, projecting the past, to the colourful and vibrant transformed heart on the right, symbolising the future. With the bag of blood used for transfusion dripped on, the ‘now’ attempts to knit and fix the broken self, while seeking out by painting and imagining its future self. Donation of organs give them hope for a second chance. For donor families, they can find solace in knowledge of their loved one’s lifesaving legacy.

The Prove It! Contest

The National Library Board recently organised The Prove It! Contest that challenges students in their knowledge and application of information literacy (IL) and critical thinking skills. To date, over 1,300 lower secondary students had participated in the contest since 2013. The contest aims to equip students with news and info-literacy skills. It also instils in them the confidence to become effective student ambassadors by spearheading their own advocacy efforts in their schools and community. This contest is supported by the Ministry of Education, Black Dot Research and Rice Media.
